“Having the carers around gave me confidence and helped me feel so much better”

After returning home from hospital following surgery for a fractured right arm sustained in a fall, Javier found himself needing additional support to maintain his safety and independence. While physically limited and still recovering, he expressed a clear wish to remain in his own home. This would allow him to maintain dignity and recover in a familiar, comforting environment.

With his increased need for supervision, assistance with personal care, and medication administration, having a live-in carer became vital.

Our Client’s Story…

Javier contacted Cavendish Homecare for support following surgery on his fractured arm. On top of that, he was also managing several ongoing health conditions. He had a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma and understood his prognosis, demonstrating clarity and full mental capacity regarding his care decisions.

Additionally, he was living with sciatica, for which he was receiving rehabilitation. His recovery had been slow, and he required assistance to regain confidence in performing personal care and activities of daily living.

Javier also had a urinary catheter managed by the district nursing team and wore continence pads, making coordinated care essential. Overall, he required gentle, consistent support to maintain his comfort, mobility, and wellbeing while living safely at home.

The Cavendish Approach…

A comprehensive and collaborative care plan was put in place to address Javier’s physical needs, promote independence, and maintain his quality of life.

The Cavendish Homecare live-in carer worked closely with the district nurses responsible for catheter care to ensure seamless communication and timely intervention. Carers provided full personal care, ensuring that pads were kept fresh at all times. Given his dry skin, they used moisturising creams or vitamin E oil, whichever he preferred, to keep his skin healthy and comfortable.

As Javier was initially bed bound, carers repositioned him every two hours using sliding sheets to minimise the risk of pressure sores. Over time, with gentle support during mobilisation, he gradually became more confident and eventually began walking faster and with greater ease.

Understanding the importance of emotional wellbeing, the team also cared for his beloved dog, taking it for morning walks and ensuring Javier could enjoy quality time with him. His friends were welcomed into the home, helping maintain his cherished social connections. Carers also prepared his meals and supported him with all daily tasks, providing reassurance and companionship throughout.

Throughout his care, Javier remained fully involved in decision-making, enabling Cavendish Homecare to tailor every aspect of support to his preferences and needs.

The Outcome…

After several years of receiving live-in care, Javier’s health naturally began to decline, leading him towards end-of-life care. Cavendish Homecare ensured a smooth and compassionate transition by introducing nurses to support the live-in carers as his clinical needs increased. This included more complex medication management and greater hands-on support. Through collaborative teamwork and personalised support, Cavendish Homecare were able to honour Javier’s wish to remain at home while ensuring he received high-quality, compassionate care throughout his journey.
