Linen Management Policy
Introduction and Scope
A domiciliary care agency’s linen management policy should focus on preventing the spread of infection through proper handling, separation of clean and dirty linen, and correct storage and transportation. Key elements include using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling soiled linen, never transporting clean and dirty linen together, and storing clean linen in a designated, dry, and clean area away from other equipment. Staff must also be trained on how to handle, bag, and transport linen, and on what to do with heavily soiled or infectious items.
Key policies and procedures
Handling and transportation
- Do not shake linen: Avoid shaking soiled or clean textiles to prevent the dispersion of microorganisms.
- Safe bagging: Place used linen in a suitable bag, without overfilling it (2/3 full is a good guideline).
- Isolate infectious linen: Place soiled, blood-stained, or infected linen in a soluble bag inside a larger, leak-proof bag, and secure it tightly.
- Clear separation: Never transport clean and dirty linen in the same bag or container.
- PPE: Wear appropriate PPE, such as gloves, when handling used or infectious linen. Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling any linen.
- Avoid contamination: Do not place personal items with linen. Transport personal items directly to the resident’s room.
Storage
- Separate areas: Store clean linen in a designated clean room or cupboard, separate from where soiled linen is processed or stored.
- Keep it dry and clean: Store clean linen in a cool, dry environment, off the floor, and away from direct sunlight.
- Maintain quality: Ensure clean linen is in good repair and free from stains.
- Keep doors closed: Keep the doors of the clean linen storage area closed to prevent contamination.
Staff training and responsibility
- Training: Ensure all staff who handle linen are trained on the policy and its importance for preventing infection.
- Hand hygiene: Emphasize the importance of hand hygiene before and after handling linen.
- PPE: Make sure appropriate PPE is available and used correctly.
- Clear roles: Define clear roles for staff involved in collecting, transporting, and storing linen.
