Care after a stroke is important to promote rehabilitation, help cope with daily routines and to manage risk factors such as any complications or recurrence. Having nursing or a care team who understand the process of stroke recovery will allow you to recover with the appropriate support with medication, rehabilitation and emotional support to you and your loved ones.
When recovering from a stroke, you will have a care plan that would focus on stroke care and rehabilitation. In the first few months, the care plan will revolve around preventing further complications. When suitable, the care plan will evolve to include rehabilitation for physical and motor skills, encouraging independent living and managing ongoing treatment and medication.
Supporting someone after stroke can be challenging and care needs will vary from person to person. Despite this, the basic needs remain the same. You can encourage rehabilitation exercises, encourage them to slowly adapt to daily life again and keep a record of the side effects they face from the medication they are taking. It will also be important to look out for any new stroke side effects and consult their doctor as soon as you notice anything unusual.

Hospice care is usually considered when a patient is near end of life and requires comprehensive support. The choice of going to hospice will depend on the advice from the medical team as well as the wishes of the patient. Similar to homecare, hospice care can be provided at any stage of the condition. Speaking to the medical team, GP and your loved one can help make the decision on whether the you should receive home or hospice care.
After a stroke, the patient will receive support looking after their teeth and mouth as good oral hygiene can help stay healthy by reducing germs in their mouth. Build-up of germs can lead to complications due to swallowing problems, changes to smell and taste, gum infections and tooth decay.

The enquiry process - What to expect
Initial Enquiry
An initial enquiry is taken when you call on behalf of yourself or someone else. An initial enquiry can be via a phone call, submitting a contact form or an email. Your enquiry is then picked up by the office team who will gather the information and pass it through to one of our nurse managers.
Call Back from Nurse Manager
One of the experienced nurse managers will give you a call back to discuss the needs in more detail and to provide their expert recommendation on the care that may be required. They will then discuss with you, what Cavendish Homecare may be able to provide, what the cost is and what timescale we would be able to commence your care.
Selection of Staff
Once an initial agreement is established, the nursing manager will start working with the bookings team to determine the most suitable nurse and/or carer are best matched with your needs.
Proposed Agreement
Following the tailored care recommendation and the selection of staff. We ensure you (the client) are happy with the proposed course of action and the care is able to commence. In some cases, an assessment visit may be required and this will be undertaken by one of our nurse managers.
Active Client
You will begin receiving outstanding homecare from our team, tailored to your needs. Your care plan will be under constant review to ensure the correct level of care is addressing your needs and being provided at all times.
