What does Alzheimer’s care at home include?

Alzheimer’s care at home involves several key components, with a strong focus on maintaining a familiar routine and a safe environment. In addition to these crucial aspects, it also encompasses a person-centred approach, emotional and psychological support, and family support, all while ensuring the client’s comfort and well-being. Alzheimer’s homecare can help manage a wide range of behavioural and cognitive symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, anxiety, and changes in mood. While it may not be possible to completely eliminate these symptoms, a specialist care team can work towards controlling them at a level that is comfortable for clients, enhancing their quality of life.

Alzheimer’s care at home aims to provide clients with a sense of normalcy and security. It is dedicated to supporting individuals with this advanced, incurable illness, providing memory and behavioural management, along with practical support as the disease progresses.

Memory and behavioural management

A core component of Alzheimer’s care is the effective management of memory and behavioural symptoms. This is crucial for improving a client’s quality of life. The care team, which may include nurses and specialist carers, works to address confusion and distress. This often involves close collaboration with a client’s GP and other specialists to ensure the client has the most appropriate medication and care plan.

FAQ

Making a consideration about whether to place a loved one into a care facility is indeed an emotional and complex decision. It requires taking into account various factors, such as finances, safety concerns, ability to perform activities of daily living, the family’s ability to provide care, severity of symptoms and the individual’s preferences. Homecare can significantly delay the need for a care facility placement, even prevent it. High-quality homecare can help individuals with Alzheimer’s disease live in the comfort of their own home, ensuring their safety for as long as needed.

Early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s often are subtle changes in memory, with common signs, such as memory loss (remembering events, names, conversations, appointments), difficulties finding words, disorientation (confusion about time, people and places), mood or behaviour changes (mood swings, unusual behaviour, being withdrawn), even challenges with familiar tasks. It is very important to consult a healthcare professional regarding any of these, as they may be caused by other conditions.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s demands understanding and patience. When communicating, use simple language and offer reassurance. Creating a familiar routine for an individual with Alzheimer’s helps reduce confusion and anxiety and creates a sense of safety.  Recognize the uniqueness and individuality of their preferences.  Remember to maintain a balanced healthy diet, including exercise and sufficient sleep if you are the primary carer for your loved one.

When caring becomes overwhelming, Cavendish Homecare is here ready to help. We provide compassionate and experienced carers and nurses to support you and your loved one.

To answer children’s questions about dementia, it’s important to be honest, simple, and reassuring:

What’s happening to them? Explain that dementia is an illness that stops the brain from working properly, affecting memory, thinking, speaking, or seeing, and that it’s not like a cold and won’t go away.

Why do they keep asking the same question? Clarify that people with dementia might remember old things but forget recent ones, so they may not remember asking a question just moments ago. Emphasise patience.

Will I get it too? Reassure them that dementia is not contagious like the flu, and having an older relative with it doesn’t mean they’ll get it when they’re older.

Will they get better? Explain that there are no cures for dementia and it will stay with the person, but doctors and nurses can help make their lives easier and suggest helpful activities.

How can I help? Encourage them to be present, show love, ask about old memories, look at photos, watch films, and listen to music. Reassure them that it’s not their fault if their loved one has a bad day.

Cavendish Homecare provides homecare services tailored to the specific needs of individuals at various stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Our experienced and trusted team of cares and nurses can offer personalised support, including:

Your Registered Nurses cared so well for Mum

Your Registered Nurses cared so well for Mum. Small things such as brushing her hair regularly, massaging her feet, hands and head, talking to her and taking her non-verbal cues into account.
