Respite Care
Cavendish Homecare received an enquiry about respite care for the family of a client who had a recent fall, which led to injuring their back and making it difficult for them to mobilise around their home.
The client had been living with a diagnosis of mild dementia and was experiencing short-term memory loss and associated symptoms of forgetfulness as a result. The client had also faced issues with mobility due to their back injury caused by the fall. Shortly after coming from the hospital, a family member found them on the floor again and had to lift the client up off the floor. The hospital advised to rest in bed following recent falls. Moreover, due to hypotension and related medication for pre-existing medical conditions including heart failure, the client was prone to experiencing dizziness which increased the risk of further falls.
A team of four highly competent nurses provided 24 hour care through day and night shifts, closely monitoring the client’s mobility and providing support to move around the house safely. During the day, the nurses assisted with medication management and activities of daily living, such as toileting, personal care and meal preparation. They guided the client through stretching and breathing exercises while standing up. The night duty ensured to make client comfortable in bed, assist with toileting when required and record general vital observations. Throughout the two weeks of respite care, improved steadily, and their pain reduced radically to the point of no complaints of pain. The client’s spouse who was present throughout, was pleasantly surprised to see the client in high spirits. After one week, there was no longer a need for nurses due to decreasing pain and client’s family requested for carers instead. Two skilled and experienced carers continued day and night shifts, observing and assisting with client’s mobility and activities of daily living.
The client’s two-week respite care allowed for their successful recovery and improvement of wellbeing, all within the familiarity of their own home. An additional benefit to the client’s wellbeing, was that their spouse and wider family were assured that the client was in good hands and their risk of falls was significantly reduced. The support of Cavendish Homecare’s nurses and carers contributed to peace of mind for the client and their loved ones.
