Our Client’s Story…
Isla had been living with a diagnosis of mild dementia and was experiencing short-term memory loss and associated symptoms of forgetfulness as a result. She had also faced issues with mobility due to her back injury caused by the fall. Shortly after coming from the hospital, a family member found Isla on the floor again and had to lift her off the floor. The hospital advised to rest in bed following recent falls. Moreover, due to hypotension and related medication for pre-existing medical conditions including heart failure, Isla was prone to experiencing dizziness which increased the risk of further falls.
The Cavendish Approach…
A team of four highly skilled nurses provided 24-hour care through rotating day and night shifts, closely monitoring Isla’s mobility and supporting her to move safely around the home. During the day, the nurses assisted with medication management and activities of daily living, including toileting, personal care, and meal preparation. They also guided her through stretching and breathing exercises while standing to promote mobility and wellbeing. Throughout the night, nurses ensured Isla remained comfortable in bed, provided toileting assistance as required, and recorded routine observations and vital signs.
Over the course of the respite care period, Isla made steady progress, with a significant reduction in pain to the extent that she no longer reported any discomfort. Her husband, who was present throughout, was delighted to see her in such positive spirits. After the first week, Isla’s pain had decreased sufficiently that nursing care was no longer required, and her family requested a transition to carer support. Two skilled and experienced carers subsequently provided day and night care, continuing to monitor and assist with Isla’s mobility and activities of daily living while supporting her ongoing recovery.
The Outcome…
Isla’s two-week respite care enabled a successful recovery and significant improvement in her overall wellbeing, while allowing her to remain in the comfort and familiarity of her own home. An additional benefit was the reassurance provided to her spouse and wider family, who felt confident that Isla was receiving high-quality care and that her risk of falls was being effectively managed. The dedicated support of Cavendish Homecare’s nurses and carers not only enhanced Isla’s wellbeing and independence but also provided invaluable peace of mind to both her and her loved ones throughout her recovery.
