Our Client’s Story…
Scott lives with dementia and Parkinson’s disease, alongside a long history of anxiety and depression. He has been prescribed anti-anxiety medication by his GP, with his treatment regularly reviewed by both his GP and psychiatrist to help maintain his mental health and overall sense of wellbeing. Scott’s mental capacity fluctuates, meaning that at times he is lucid, engaged and able to communicate clearly. At other times, he becomes confused and disoriented.
The Cavendish Approach…
Cavendish Homecare developed a personalised care plan centred on emotional reassurance, consistency and gentle behavioural support techniques. Carers were carefully selected to provide continuity, as Scott expressed a strong preference for familiar faces. This consistency helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of safety and trust. During periods of agitation or distress, carers adopt a patient and gentle approach, using distraction techniques to help him regain a sense of calm. A hand massage with lavender cream has proven particularly effective in soothing him, while listening to classical or opera music is often encouraged as a calming activity.
Due to Scott’s memory difficulties, carers repeat information as often as needed, in a reassuring and supportive manner. If his distress escalates and he is unable to settle, carers support him in taking his prescribed anti-anxiety medication, in line with GP guidance. Scott’s medication and mental health are closely monitored, with ongoing communication between carers, his GP and psychiatrist to ensure the care remains appropriate and responsive to his needs.
The Outcome…
With a consistent and compassionate approach, Scott continues to be supported safely in his own home. The stability of his care team, combined with tailored calming strategies, has helped to reduce distress and manage his anxiety more effectively. Cavendish Homecare continues to provide ongoing care, adapting to his fluctuating needs while ensuring he feels secure, respected and comforted in a familiar environment.
