“The team has been fantastic throughout”

Hana contacted Cavendish Homecare after being diagnosed with bowel cancer, seeking end of life care that would allow her to remain at home with dignity. Fully aware of her condition and the likelihood of rapid deterioration, she wanted above all to remain in her flat. With persistent discomfort in her legs that made movement increasingly difficult, she began to need help with the everyday tasks that once felt effortless. Cavendish Homecare was asked to create a plan of care that respected her wishes and supported her with dignity.

Our Client’s Story…

During a Nurse Manager visit, Hana emphasised that she would like her routine to be as normal as possible, for as long as possible. She was anxious about losing independence and feared becoming a burden to her family. She needed help with personal care, mobility and medication, as well as reassurance that she would not face the journey alone.

The Cavendish Approach…

At first, Hana had carers visiting twice daily, supporting her with washing, dressing, meals and pain relief. But as her health declined, visits increased to longer shifts and eventually to full 24-hour care. From the beginning, the hospice team and District Nurses worked closely alongside the Cavendish Homecare carers. Together, the carers and other health professionals managed her medication, ensured equipment was in place and responded swiftly to changes in her condition.

Pain management was always central. Medications were administered on time, and Hana was able to continue applying heat cream to her leg herself, something that gave her a sense of control. The District Nurses administered injections, while our team remained her constant presence, offering companionship and gentle reassurance.

Equally important were her emotional and spiritual needs. Hana loved watching sports, so the team made sure she could enjoy her favourite events. Her sister was able to stay with her, and her daughter was supported through the difficult process of watching her mother’s health deteriorate. Family visits were encouraged, and the atmosphere of her home remained one of comfort and connection.

The Outcome…

Hana passed away peacefully in her flat, with her symptoms managed and her wishes respected. Her final days were calm and dignified, filled with moments of closeness with her loved ones. After her passing, support was extended to her daughter, who received guidance and bereavement care.

Hana’s story reflects the Cavendish Homecare’s approach: holistic, compassionate and deeply personal care. It is about tending not just to the illness, but to the person and her family, creating space for dignity, peace and connection at the end of life.
