“The guidance and care given has been vital to recovery”

Following a hip replacement operation, Stephen’s son contacted Cavendish Homecare to arrange care for his father after his discharge from hospital. He wanted live-in post operative care for two weeks to assist with mobility, personal care and daily living, while ensuring his comfort and safety during recovery.

Stephen also had an existing cancer diagnosis, which meant that care required needed to be both clinically and emotionally supportive.

Our Client’s Story…

Prior to discharge, Mairead, the Registered Nurse Manager, visited Stephen in hospital to introduce herself and build rapport with both Stephen and his son to help ease any anxiety and ensured a smooth transition from hospital to home. In addition to recovering from hip replacement surgery, Stephen was living with breast cancer, which had spread to other organs. He experienced intermittent pain and fatigue, requiring carers to take additional care.

Stephen required assistance with moving and handling, particularly for toileting, applying prescribed creams, and getting in and out of bed. Stephen was supported when mobilising with a Zimmer frame and needed help with activities of daily living such as preparing breakfast and meals throughout the day. Despite his health challenges, he continued to enjoy his hobbies, including listening to music, which carers encouraged as part of his emotional wellbeing.

The Cavendish Approach…

The focus of care was promoting safe recuperation while preserving Stephen’s independence, dignity and emotional wellbeing. Stephen was able to take his own medication. Thus, carers provided gentle prompting and supervision to ensure this was done safely and consistently. Due to an increased risk of falls, the carers remained vigilant at all times, offering support with mobility. They also ensured his environment was safe and free from hazards.

Stephen’s expressed preferences regarding food and drink was followed, supporting adequate nutrition and hydration throughout the day. He also received assistance with personal care, including skin care and oral hygiene, to maintain comfort and overall health. Support was provided with the administration of prescribed eye drops as part of his daily routine.

His care plan included the administration of Co-amoxiclav three times daily to prevent infection, alongside supporting his prescribed Ribociclib for breast cancer and managing post operative pain relief. Daily observations were taken to monitor his recovery and identify any concerns promptly.

A call bell was introduced during the first visit, allowing Stephen to easily ask for assistance when needed without carers being constantly present. This approach supported both safety and privacy. Throughout his recovery, carers offered reassurance and emotional support, recognising that the healing process can be physically painful and emotionally challenging.

Stephen retained full mental capacity and was actively involved in decisions about his care. This collaborative approach helped him feel informed, in control and supported throughout his recovery period.

The Outcome…

With consistent live-in support, Stephen’s recovery was both steady and successful. As his mobility returned and his confidence grew, he was able to transition back to independent living within two weeks—ready to enjoy life without the burden of chronic hip pain.
